The Decompressor Lever (often colloquially referred to as a “choke lever” by mistake due to its similar look and placement) is an iconic component of vintage Royal Enfield Cast Iron (CI) and AVL models.

While a true Choke Lever is located on the carburetor to assist with cold starts, the Decompressor Lever is mounted on the handlebars and is used to manually release engine cylinder pressure.

Functionality & Use

  • Easier Starting: By pulling the lever, you open a small valve in the cylinder head, releasing compression. This allows you to position the piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) more easily before a full kick-start.

  • Engine Kill Switch: In vintage models, it is often used as a mechanical “kill switch” to stop the engine smoothly without the risk of kick-back or “thumping” after the ignition is off.

  • Cold Start Assistance: It allows the rider to “prime” the engine by kicking it over several times with reduced resistance to get fuel into the chamber.
